| About the Artist John Urquidi, born in 1961, grew up in the Santa Monica mountains near what is now called Pt. Mugu State Park, California. He has enjoyed art from a very early age. He attended Ventura College and received scholarship awards including those from a commercial studio and the Santa Paula Art Society. After he graduated in 1988 with a commercial art degree, he explored a brief stint as a freelance graphic designer. He then went on to work as a design drafter in Santa Barbara, and has continued with studio classes at Santa Barbara Adult Education. In 2003 with a renewed interest, he joined the Goleta Valley Art Association and in 2004 the Santa Barbara Art Association. |

I
paint to capture an instance and build an interpretation
pleasing to me, enhancing what I see visually. Subject
matter takes on a different look after a prolonged
observation and can be reorganized, relative object scale
adjusted and morphed to augment composition. I seem to be moving towards an economy of brushwork, where the viewer has more leeway to interpret shape and color and texture. I've always been fascinated with the mechanical and a revered the natural." |
