About the Artist

John Urquidi, born in 1961, grew up in the Santa Monica mountains near what is now called Pt. Mugu State Park, California. He has enjoyed art from a very early age.

He attended Ventura College and received scholarship awards including those from a commercial studio and the Santa Paula Art Society. After he graduated in 1988 with a commercial art degree, he explored a brief stint as a freelance graphic designer. He then went on to work as a design drafter in Santa Barbara, and has continued with studio classes at Santa Barbara Adult Education.

In 2003 with a renewed interest, he joined the Goleta Valley Art Association and in 2004 the Santa Barbara Art Association.

“I paint to capture an instance and build an interpretation pleasing to me, enhancing what I see visually. Subject matter takes on a different look after a prolonged observation and can be reorganized, relative object scale adjusted and morphed to augment composition.

I seem to be moving towards an economy of brushwork, where the viewer has more leeway to interpret shape and color and texture. I've always been fascinated with the mechanical and a revered the natural."
